Board Games We Love: Chess Sets

Chess sets are for more than just playing chess on if this collection is anything to go by. There are some beautiful, funny and unique chess sets available which make a real statement in any home. My hubby loves looking at different chess sets and talks about buying them to place on a side table.........I can't remember ever seeing him play!

At the moment our chess set is a standard wooden one and it gets brought out regularly during school holidays usually as my dd attempts to beat me before deciding that it's boring and let's play checkers......she can't beat me at that either, but she's improving all the time.

I do absolutely drool over some of the chess sets on offer, so much so I've had to write about a few that I've come across because they would be such a great set to own or to give as a gift. Seeing such beautiful sets it can be hard to remember that chess is actually a game based on war.....

My Basic Chess Set

A Wooden Chess Set

This is the basic chess set that I use at home, as you can see it's also a checkers set which is great for a family. The strange thing is that a few years ago when my daughter first started school she played chess against me quite well, but just couldn't seem to grasp checkers!

We enjoy both games and having just has a very wet summer holidays this board has recently had a lot of use.

Playing chess with your children is a great idea as they have to think several moves ahead which has to help them with problem solving in other areas of their life and education.

I think a basic set like our one is great, but I must admit I do yearn for some of the other cool sets that are available.
It seems as though whatever you're into there's a chess set to suit from Star Wars to Elvis and from Winnie the Pooh to Harry Potter.

If mere chess is a little 'boring' or 'pedestrian' for you then you can even get the tri-dimensional chess as seen on Star Trek. Now I haven't played this one before, but as Spock enjoyed it I'd guess that it's the next logical step to the classical game of chess!
